Why a Safety Program?

In a small percentage of home installations, about 1 in 10,000, there have been reports of fires where HRV’s have been present. You should know that in extensive testing conducted by the Canadian Standards Association International (CSA), Nutech and independent third party experts, these units have never been shown to cause fires. However, in the interests of safety and because a small number of fires of an unexplained nature have taken place in homes with these HRV’s, Nutech has volunteered to conduct a Safety Program.

Which HRV brands qualify?

HRV brands that qualify for the Safety Program include Lifebreath, Tradewinds, Honeywell, Lennox, Fresh-X-Changer, American Aldes, Raydot, Standex, Sears Authorized Indoor Clean Air Services, Nutone and Airflow manufactured between 1992 to 1998 by Nutech R. Hldngs Inc.

What should you do if you have an affected HRV?

Nutech R. Hldngs Inc., in close cooperation with the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA), is asking customers to unplug affected HRV’s (with white fan motors) and to contact Nutech R. Hldngs Inc. to register for the Safety Program.

The fan motors of the affected HRV’s are white in color. Please note that if the fan motor is not white in color, it is not subject to the Safety Program (see figure 9 to identify location of fan motor).

How can you confirm that you have an affected HRV?

There are 2 ways to confirm whether you have an affected HRV.

1. Serial Number

Locate the electrical cord (Figure 1), unplug the HRV from the electrical outlet and find the date the HRV was manufactured through the serial number on the manufacturer’s name plate. Write down the serial number. Serial numbers containing the numbers 29, 39, 49, 59, 95, 96, 97, or 98 will qualify for the Safety Program unless the original white motor has been replaced (replacement fan motors are grey or black). Refer to the attached instructions on how to locate the serial number name plate.

2. Motor Color

Locate the electrical cord (Figure 1), unplug the HRV from the electrical outlet and open the front access door. Note the color of the fan motor (usually located on the right side of the HRV [Figure 9]). Fan motors affected by this Safety Program are white in color. If the fan motor is white, please leave the HRV unplugged, close the front access door and contact us. If the fan motor is grey or black then the HRV is not affected by this Safety Program.
